Hello, my name is Madeline and I have recently joined the library team at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust as a Library Assistant. The world of library and knowledge services is a completely new one to me; I graduated from university at the height of the pandemic with a real sense of uncertainty about where I wanted my career to take me. When I saw the listing for the post, I knew instantly that I had to apply – I’ve been an avid library user all my life and the idea of being able to apply my communication and (somewhat obsessive, I’ll admit) organisational skills to a role really excited me.
There’s definitely been a lot to learn and starting a new job is always daunting, but I feel like I’m settling in and making a difference already. I’ve loved having the opportunity to use my IT skills to improve the library experience for our users. Helen Curtis, the library manager, has been so supportive and encouraging which has made the whole experience a really positive one for me. The most surprising task I’ve been allocated so far would definitely have to be pimping up our headsets with glittery tape in an attempt to prevent people from taking them out of the library – I felt like I was on an episode of Blue Peter!
Looking forward, I’m keen to get stuck into everything the role has to offer. I’m excited about the future of health libraries and how the rapidly changing digital landscape will continue to impact the services we offer.
